February started off with our annual Black History Culture Walk. The children learned about the hidden messages in music by African Americans or activists from 17th century to today. The choir sang the Black National Anthem after other children reacted performances of iconic African American singers, dancers, and musicians.
The teachers and children had an option to design their classroom door with Black History facts or Valentine’s Day décor. The winning door had a timeline of how African Americans impacted the food industry and different fun facts.
The children celebrated Valentine’s Day by wearing pink or red to school and had a party in their classrooms. Throughout the month, the children were engaged in a variety of activities focused on Black History Month, such as designing and researching African American print.
To end the month, the staff and children had a movie night and watched Harriet, the story of Harriet Tubman’s escape from slavery and transformation into one of America’s greatest heroes.
In addition there were regular activities including step team practices, student government meeting (SGA), Black Out Day, the children wore all black to class one day, Dress to Impress Day,BINGO night, book clubs, and lastly Unity Day, on the last day of month the children dressed in the colors of the Black Liberation Flag; red, yellow or green in honor of Black History Month (BHM). This flag was developed in the 1920s, and for years the flag has been utilized as a symbol of solidarity and pride for people of African descent worldwide. Overall, the children and staff had a memorable month filled with activities and opportunities to make learning fun.
