GWALTNEY SCHOOL

Jackson-Feild’s students attend Gwaltney School, located on the main campus in Jarratt, Virginia. Gwaltney School is licensed by the Virginia Department of Education and is accredited by the Virginia Association of Independent Specialized Educational Facilities. Our school specializes in teaching those students who have been unable to reach their age-appropriate grade level due to circumstances in their lives. Upon enrollment, the boy and girls receive an educational assessment to determine their education plan. The plan allows the education staff to implement a curriculum to enable the student to achieve a level of education in line with the student’s appropriate grade level.

Gwaltney School provides educational services which include GED, Special Education, middle and high school curriculum. College courses are offered through attendance at Southside Virginia Community College or through distance-learning on-line from University of Nebraska and University of Missouri.

VOCATIONAL TRAINING

Gwaltney School offers vocational training for students who are seeking tangible job skills leading towards a viable career path. With certification in our vocational program, residents are able to return to their community with skills that allow them to be hired by companies who desire experienced workers. Each graduate has achieved national standards certification showing they have completed each required area for their certification.

National Restaurant Association ServeSafe Certification in culinary arts.

STUDENT ON A STRING

Gwaltney School students who are discharged from Jackson-Feild prior to earning their high school diploma or GED now have the opportunity to complete their education through our “Student on A String” curriculum.

Students at Gwaltney School are enrolled and withdrawn according to their individual treatment plan. Often, they arrive or leave in the middle of a semester. For students approaching the age at which they may no longer attend high school, such interruptions can be damaging to their ability and desire to complete their education.

Using the web-based curriculum called Odysseyware, students who have left Jackson-Feild may continue to take subjects and GED preparation courses. We mail textbooks and educational materials to participating students, and through Oddysseyware, follow their progress on a daily basis. Our Individual Student Alternative Education Coordinator is available via telephone and e-mail to provide assistance as needed to help students understand and complete the course assignments. Once a student has completed the online GED preparation course, arrangements are made for the student to take the test in his or her home locality. Students completing their diploma or certification are invited to join our student body for the full graduation ceremony.

This innovative educational program is only one of many commitments to our students. By completing their education through “Student on A String”, our students are able to continue onto higher education or go out into the world and live independent and successful lives.
